Garden has pretty much taken care of itself from the teenage stages. As nature will have it, some of what we decided with gusto to plant with wild abandon... well, it just didn't take hold in this climate! Surprise surprise! Root crops? No way, too dry here and require a LOT more attention than we were able to give. Maybe next year in a shadier location they will do a little better. So out went those, along with the beans and peas (again, its a desert climate here in San Diego... we were a bit ambitious!) and in went a few tomatoes and some carnations just to richen the soil with some organic matter. All of them doing well and we should have carnations blooming in a couple days! Here's one of my favorite tomatoes... indigo rose! The fruit is dark purple, almost black! Can't wait till these get a little bigger. Tomatoes up by the house of course doing very well.
Meanwhile, the squash and corn have pretty much taken over the yard! Literally growing beyond the garden and into the grass and hedges now!
And here are some close ups of our summer squash, pumpkins, watermelon and zuchino rampicante... a giant heirloom squash that apparently really likes San Diego climate! The late and winter squash are all coming up now too and growing stronger.
Last but not least, onions and potatoes doing wonderfully, and a parting shot of our first baby ear of corn! Things are coming up golden here!
More news soon folks, I promise to try not to let so much time pass before the next update!
Beautiful pictures and great news on your progress. Every gardener will tell you that gardening (flower or vegetable) is an endless process of learning. Some things work; some don't. It's all good, as it helps you learn what will grow in your yard. :)
